Dissolving Pulp Market Share, Growth, Approaches and Forecast by 2024

World demand for “Dissolving Pulp” began trending steeply upwards in the early years of the current decade and has continued to grow above the rate of GDP. A lot of the increase in demand is due to substitution for cotton.

Dissolving pulps are used to produce cellulosic materials such as acetate, cellophanes, and rayons. Their manufacture is characterized by the derivatization and thus solubilization of highly purified cellulose. Hemi cellulosic contaminants lead to colour and haze in the product, as well as to insoluble that hamper the manufacturing process. Their extraction from the pulps requires the use of high caustic loadings and appropriate pulping conditions, the latter restricted to sulphite pulping and acid-pre-treated kraft pulping.

Dissolving pulp is so named because it is not made into paper but dissolved either in a solvent or by derivatization into a homogeneous solution, which makes it completely chemically accessible and removes any remaining fibrous structure. Once dissolved, it can be spun into textile fibre (viscose or Lyocell), or chemically reacted to produce derivatized celluloses, such cellulose triacetate, a plastic-like material formed into fibre or films, or cellulose ethers such as methyl cellulose, used as a thickener.
